Four years ago I quit my job and headed to South East Asia. I thought I’d end up living in Cambodia for a year, teaching English, and then reinventing everything. That didn’t work out. I will always have that seldom used, very expensive, CELTA certificate.
Eighteen months later I was back in London. Somehow I never did settle down in Phnom Penh. There was a trip to Australia by mistake, and I had been to Mexico, twice. Sorry the second trip didn’t make it onto the blog. Maybe a retrospective post would be appropriate. That was the more fun trip. So, back in London, and I was really not sure what to do. It took almost a year to focus on the answer, which was to go to SOAS (The School of Oriental and African Studies), learn to speak some South East Asian languages, and go back to that amazing part of the world.
They accepted me. In October 2017 I started a BA in South East Asian Studies, with a year abroad in Vietnam. The library here is heaven. I have spent a lot of time in the library. There have been times when I’ve burst into tears walking down an aisle of books. All this beautiful knowledge here for me. Thank you Book Gods.
The year is nearly through. Just a few exams to sit and I will be off to Vietnam for the summer. The summer will finish with a few weeks in Burma as that is the other language I will be studying next year. Because, you know, Vietnamese is not hard enough.
There will be photos and stories appearing on this blog starting on June 7th. Write to me.
